Not sure if it’s accurate that Ford de-tuned the SVO to keep V8 sales up. There may be an article somewhere from back in the day that I’m not aware of, but their actions seem to prove otherwise. They made more power every year from ‘84 to ‘85.5 (‘86 made 5hp less than the previous half year), proving they weren’t planning on hampering the SVOs potential - they were trying to push/explore it. In fact, they were actually planning an ‘87 year SVO with dual cams which would have easily made 250hp or more. The SVO outran the V8s of the day, but were $5-7k more than GTs and LXs. And the oil crisis of the 70s made all the 80s customers want V8s regardless of the suboptimal performance they had compared to the SVOs. In short, SVOs were ahead of their time, but behind the wants of the market at the time which is why they didn't sell and production was limited, it wasn't to save the reputation/sales of the V8 cars. The V8s sold like crazy regardless of what they did (or didn’t do) to the SVO.
